What is gambling addiction?
Pathological gambling behavior is characterized by a lack of control that leads to repetition and compulsion. Gambling becomes a dominant thought that influences the person’s lifestyle and daily life. The main characteristics of gambling addiction are:
-
A strong urge to gamble (e.g., slot machines, roulette, lotteries, sports betting)
-
Difficulty controlling gambling behavior
-
Withdrawal symptoms when gambling is not possible
-
A gradual increase in bets and risk-taking to achieve the same sensations
-
Prioritizing gambling over all other responsibilities or activities
-
Continuing to gamble despite sometimes very serious consequences
-
Taking out loans or accumulating debts due to unpaid bills
There are three phases that describe the development of gambling addiction:
1. Winning phase
In this phase, players usually win big amounts. This experience creates the illusion that winning may be influenced by one’s actions, other than being purely a matter of luck. The unavoidable consequent losses are considered a result of explainable external causes and are usually concealed. This behavior becomes an issue when players keep wagering big amounts of money or get to the point of asking loans in order to continue playing. All loans are asked in pursuit of only one goal: to keep playing.
2. Losing phase
In the next phase, players exclusively use borrowed money. Usually, this phase marks the beginning of a gradual estrangement from family and friends. However, players are still convinced of being able to control their debts.
3. Desperation phase
Gambling occupies a person’s whole day and prevails on their other interests, leading to a loss of personal relationships, job and reputation.
Here is a list of suggestions to help you play responsibly:
-
Never play if you are tired, depressed, ill or worried about relationship, family or school issues,
-
Only play with amounts intended for leisure or entertainment,
-
Before starting to play, define a maximum amount that you want to use. Any amount played should be reasonably proportioned to your financial situation,
-
Never try to win back what you lost. Usually, the more risk you take, the more the loss will be,
-
Take brakes during the game,
-
Avoid consuming alcohol while gambling; it increases your willingness to take risks and alters your judgement ability,
-
Never think that you can outsmart the system. Gambling is simply based on luck, and it doesn’t depend on any kind of special ability.
Usually, some warning signs could indicate a possible gambling addiction, if they are recognized early on. The Self-assessment test is a useful tool to help recognize these early signs and it is based on proven research.
