The history of Casinò Lugano
The origins of Casino Lugano date back to 1912, when it obtained a license to operate small games, soon becoming a landmark for entertainment and sociability in the region. In 1922, it changed its name to the Kursaal Theater and Casino, where top entertainment shows and evenings were held. In those years, the Casino was not only a gambling house, but also a cultural center that hosted major events. A significant example was the first Eurovision Song Contest, which was held right in Lugano in 1956, adding further prestige to the facility.
In 1970, the Municipality of Lugano became the main shareholder of the Casino, consolidating its institutional presence and ties with the city. The introduction of the first slot machines in 1992, alongside the historic “boule,” marked a new phase for the Casino's evolution, expanding the range of games on offer and attracting an increasingly diverse audience. With the introduction of “big games” in Switzerland in 1993, Casino Lugano was granted a type “A” license, a prestigious recognition that elevated it to a benchmark in the casino industry in Europe. November 29, 2002 marked a historic date with the birth of Casino Lugano SA, an institution that continued to grow and innovate. The new logo launched on that occasion symbolized the renewal of a structure that was always in step with the times. Over the years, Casino has maintained a strong connection with the local area and its community. Currently, 65.7% of the shares are held by the City of Lugano, 28.8% by Casinos Austria Swiss, and the remainder by small private shareholders. Subsequent redesigns in 2014 and 2018, the latter coinciding with the closure of the neighboring Casino di Campione, marked further milestones in its history, reinforcing its position as one of Europe's most prestigious and long-lived casinos. Today, Casino Lugano not only continues to offer a unique gaming experience, but is also an integral part of the city's cultural and social life, keeping alive a tradition that spans more than a century of history.
